Nepal - Update #4
hi everyone!
we flew back to Kathmandu last night! but in 15 minutes, we'll be headed off for the airport soon... to go trekking and handing out bibles. before we go, however, i wanted to give you guys a quick (VERY brief) summary of last week in Itahari/Dharan...
Leprosy Home Visits:
With NLF (Nepal Leprosy Fellowship), the Christian NGO that Htway is involved with, we were able to make alot of home visits and check-up and follow-up on leprosy patients, with Wayne as the MD. It was amazing to see where all the different patients live... the first "home" we went to, it literally was out in the village with straw huts made from dung patties. As PA exclaimed, "Wow, its like we're in Africa!" Literally, we felt like we stepped into a scene on the discovery channel. what blew me away was just how much God loves these people, and weeps for them.
Construction site @ Maderly village:
At another village site, we partnered with UMN and NLF to help build a building for the village. It was hard work and at first very discouraging (the first day we were the only ones doing the hard labor and the villagers hardly came out to help us - many of them men were having 4 hour lunches/naps and playing cards!) After some haggling with the village leader, we were able to convey the message that we were not there to build the entire structure for them by ourselves; we were here to partner with them and help them along - but because this is THEIR structure for THEIR village, they ought to take responsbility and initiative as well. At the end, they all came together and we were able to share bibles and some worship songs with them (in nepalese!) and we saw a genuine interest in learning about the gospel from the village leader and others.
there are many other things that happened last week, but i don't have much time to put in this email (there isn't enough room either!) our health has been ok. our time as been encouraging - God is definately working! thanks for praying! we'll be trekking today until thursday, and we'll fly back to Kathmandu thursday (hopefully).
love,
wayne & ruth
