Something different
So the other day W and I were at the local Raley's to pick up some groceries for dinner that night. As I was at the checkout, I noticed that the cashier guy (a heavy set, 30-something white male) had his nails all done. Meaning, he had a full set of white tipped, french manicure on his hands. I was impressed. I thought about commenting on those - something to the effect of "nice manicure" when I had a sudden thought that perhaps his nails was a result of a cruel bet with his friends. OR maybe he LIKED getting french manicures (but he didn't appear gay, but who knows). Then I thought, maybe he has a pension for cross-dressing up at night and by day, he can't really change his nails while he's at work.
Anyhow, I ended up not saying a thing while I grabbed my groceries and head off to the parking lot. W told me that I could have at least said "nice nails" - it was generic enough that I wouldn't offend any possible scenarios playing in my head. Nevertheless, it was interesting. I was thinking of my brother's black nails and thought that perhaps a man wearing black nail polish was probably more "gender-accepted" than a man with a very nice white-tipped french manicure with little colorful flowers on his nails (yes, there WERE little spring flower nail art on his nails).
