Listening to Madonna's new song, "Die Another Day" from the new Bond movie. I really like it. Madonna rocks. She may have been controversial a while back, but I admire her for being a strong woman who won't let society define her. She set out to define society. She's a great example of how women can be beautiful, intelligent, strong, sexy, ironic, and creative all at the same time. It's sad how our culture stifles us girls at an early age (see Mary Piper's "Reviving Ophelia") and we buy into what labels make us whole and complete as individuals. Wayne was browsing around Time Magazine the other day, and found an interesting photoessay book somewhat related to this. I found it very interesting. Now you know why I hated high school. I felt so stifled.

And this may be a weird connection, but I think of Amy Grant in the same category. There was quite a bit of hoopla when she did her musical crossover... and her biggest critics were the Christian community, which I find really sad and very hypocritical. They didn't let her be a human being who has feelings, desires, pains, and dreams. Grant is a woman similar to Madonna in that they are just themselves with no pretenses, and some people can't handle it (well, with Madonna, its a bit understandable). And some choose to attack and tear down others instead. What a shame.
