Been thinking alot about mentoring lately. These past couple years, there has been an emphasis in our young adult group for mentors/disciplers and just plain older people who can share their life experience with us. Some of the girls have been wanting it pretty bad as well... as young people "in transition" no one seems to know where they're headed or where they ought to be headed with career, relationships, and life. And ever since I was in high school, I've been pleading for a mentor/discipler myself; and being new in this big church and all, I figured that if the older women aren't being proactive, I'll go out and try to meet them. So I started taking some women classes, meeting them in small groups and such. And from my experiences, I was sorely disappointed. Not only were the older women seemingly not interested in building relationships with the younger folk, but they themselves felt that they needed mentors themselves!

I was a little put off by that (thinking that they were too self-absorbed to want to minister to younger women as Paul tells us to do) but then I started realizing that no matter what season in life we're in, we ALL need mentors... there is no point in life where you feel like you have ARRIVED and have everything all set and perfect and ready to start giving to the younger groups. From that insight, I was determined to get the ball rolling (hey, if no one else is going to do it, I ought to start with myself!!) I've never been mentored before, and had a stint doing it (quite informally) back when I was a youth worker... but no real example of how it works and what it entails. So I've picked up a mentoring book by Bobb Biehl, and another by Carol Kent. Looks good so far...
